2021 / Immersive Experience
Trace
Trace closes Nohlab's FLOW exhibition at AKM Istanbul. It is the finale room where visitors steer sound and image with their own movement, leaving a momentary mark on a future-facing landscape. GATE and MOMENT earlier in the route are sequential experiences; Trace is the only fully interactive chapter.
My work sat on the creative technology and visualization side of that interaction. Three LiDAR sensors had to be mapped and calibrated in 3D before the room could respond accurately. Visitor position and trigger data traveled over OSC to Max for sound design; the visual layer lived in TouchDesigner, with welcome and interaction stages that shifted as people entered the space.
The engineering question wasn't novelty. It was feel. Body movement had to guide visuals and audio without perceptible lag, without the slight disconnect that breaks immersion in sensor-driven rooms. The compensation across sensors, projection, and playback was the part I focused on making invisible.
What visitors experienced was immediate: step in, the room adjusts, movement becomes input. Behind that simplicity sat calibration work that made a large architectural zone feel responsive rather than technical.
Nohlab’s solo experiential exhibition FLOW was open between October 29 and November 14, 2021 at AKM, Istanbul. At the entrance GATE, formed by light rods, invites people in with a special light and sound choreography, using excerpts from past performances and symbolic representatives of our memories about the space. With MOMENT, visitors find the chance to experience the moment they are in, through twin LED tower corridors they pass. A spatial choreography formed by more contemporary expressions in sound and light, combined with visuals creates a hybrid experience. At the end of our journey, TRACE offers an interactive experience area, where people guide the sound and visuals representing the future with their own body movements, leaving a trace to the future with their momentary acts.
